Does my 3-year-old need an instrument at home right away?

Yes — to make real progress, your child will need access to a piano at home for daily practice. We recommend a full 88-key weighted keyboard at minimum, and ideally an upright or grand piano. If you're not sure where to start, Cristina is happy to discuss rental options that work for your budget.

How long are lessons for young children?

For ages 3–4, lessons are 30 minutes — perfectly matched to a toddler's attention span. Children aged 5 and older typically do 30–45 minutes per session. Once a student has established a consistent practice routine at home, lessons can grow to 60 minutes.

Should I stay during my child's lesson?

For children under 5, parents are strongly encouraged to sit in on every lesson. Cristina will show you exactly how to supervise practice at home — the right technique, posture, and approach — so your child builds good habits from day one.

My child has never touched an instrument — is that fine?

Absolutely! Complete beginners are always welcome. Starting from zero with young children is our favourite — no habits to undo, and the joy of discovery is pure and wonderful.

Do you offer online lessons?

All lessons are in-person at the Mahwah studio. For students aged 8 and above who have already built a solid foundation, occasional online lessons may be considered — for example, to review homework, check progress, or work on musicality and expression.

What if my child wants to try a different instrument?

Many children start on piano and later transition to violin or viola, which works beautifully because piano naturally builds the music reading and ear training skills that strings require. Cristina will always guide you toward the path that sets your child up for the most enjoyment and success.

Cristina is a Steinway Certified Educator with 10+ years of experience teaching piano and violin, coaching children from as young as 3 years old. She has guided students to prestigious programs including Mark Twain Gifted & Talented (Music), Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Performing Arts, and Manhattan School of Music Pre-College.

She prepares students for national and state examinations — almost all of her students who sit the UK Royal Schools of Music ABRSM exam achieve a Distinguished or Merit result. She also prepares for the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) examinations.

I believe young children learn best in a supportive but structured environment. My teaching focuses on building strong foundations, healthy practice habits, and confidence from the very beginning.

I work closely with families to make sure students are progressing in the right direction — both in and out of lessons. Between sessions, I review practice videos and homework so I can give timely feedback, correct technique early, and keep every student on track.

My studio is a good fit for families who value consistency, long-term growth, and meaningful progress. I'm not the right fit for every family — and I'd rather be honest about that upfront than have a child plateau because the environment at home isn't aligned with the work we do together.

Cristina began piano at age 5 and violin at 10 in Taiwan, winning the audition for the Primary Music School of Tainan at age 9. She earned her Bachelor of Music at SooChow University, then received a Music Talent Scholarship to pursue her Master of Music Performance at NYU Steinhardt.

She served as Adjunct Faculty at NYU Steinhardt from 2012–2015 and has performed with the Taipei Philharmonic, NYU Philharmonic, United Nations Symphony Orchestra, and at venues in Oslo, Prague, Beijing, and New York.
